Gubbi Gubbi 2023: Bayside Juniors

We are filled with pride and gratitude for the remarkable journey of our Bayside Juniors and Coach Shelley Anne Wharehinga.

Their adventure over the Gubbi Gubbi weekend was a roller coaster of challenges and emotions, but their determination and unwavering spirit prevailed, and they delivered an impressive medal haul.

A massive shoutout to our incredible parents and families who not only survived the kids but also each other! Your dedication and support are immeasurable, and your contributions have allowed Coach Shelley to focus on her role, and we are profoundly grateful.

As we move forward, it’s back to the grind for our team. We’ve got the GC Sprints Regatta, Spirit of Aloha, Nationals, World qualifiers, and Training Camp 2 with Redcliffe on the horizon. Gubbi Gubbi provided us with invaluable lessons and insights that we’ll use to guide our strategies moving forward.

This event was an absolute whirlwind, marked by triumphs and challenges. We owe a massive debt of aroha to our dedicated volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this event a reality. It’s through adversity that we learn and grow, and we appreciate all of you for your relentless efforts.

Thank you to Allen Houston and Robbie Clark, for towing our va’as up to Mooloolaba. Allen’s time on the support boat made it possible for every Junior to take to the water. We genuinely appreciate your dedication, Al!

Our parents, who rolled up their sleeves to handle boats, clean up, and assist with various tasks, made our jobs infinitely more manageable. Your proactive involvement did not go unnoticed, and we’re incredibly thankful.

Our committee members, who supported our juniors despite not having kids in the race and who dedicated their long weekend to be there. Your presence and assistance with boat handling, timekeeping, and Hawaiian night were instrumental in ensuring a seamless event.

Lastly, a heart-warming story from the weekend revealed the incredible sportsmanship and compassion of our young paddlers. The gesture from Oscar White (Noosa OCC), presenting our Epi with two caps that read “EPIC” highlighting his name, brought tears to our eyes, reminding us of the exceptional character our juniors are building.

We extend our deep thanks to each one of you for making Gubbi Gubbi 2023 an unforgettable experience and we can’t wait to do it again next year.
