HISTORY OF OUTRIGGER CANOEING IN AUSTRALIA
Our outrigger canoe journey takes us back to the roots of this remarkable sport, which has its origins in the ancient coastal cultures of the Pacific rim, dating back some 30,000 years. These canoes played a vital role in the survival and migration of those ancient cultures.
Over time, outrigger canoe racing evolved into the exhilarating and competitive sport we know today. The first canoe race, originally for men, was held in Waikiki, Hawaiian Islands in 1917. In Australia, outrigger canoeing emerged more recently, with the formation of the first club in 1978 on the Gold Coast, followed by the inaugural club in Sydney in 1989, coinciding with the first Australian Championships.
Since then, the sport has experienced remarkable growth, with over 60 clubs now thriving across the country. These clubs have played a pivotal role in fostering this growth, organising races, and maintaining a deep-rooted connection to the heritage and cultures from which outrigger canoeing originated. The sport is governed by AOCRA (Australian Outrigger Canoe Racing Association) as the peak body and the various racing Zones across the country (SQ Zone, NQ Zone, NSW Zone, WA Zone and Southern States)
