Celebrating Greg Gibbards: A Gold Medal Triumph in Apia, Samoa

In the world of va’a / outrigger paddling, Greg Gibbards stands as a testament to dedication, commitment, and a love for the sport.

As a cherished member of the Bayside Outrigger Canoe Club, Greg’s remarkable journey recently took him all the way to Apia, Samoa, where he represented Australia in the World Va’a Marathon for Master Men 70 V6 from 10th August 2023 - 19th August 2023. His journey was crowned with exceptional success as he secured a gold medal and World Champion title, making us all at Bayside incredibly proud.

Greg’s paddling skill and years of experience made him the ideal choice to represent the Australian team, and he did not disappoint. The World Va’a Titles are renowned for the formidable competition it attracts, yet Greg’s determination and expertise shone through. While his performance and triumph was celebrated amongst brothers and peers in Samoa, his success was shared across the moana with our Bayside whanau.

Greg’s journey has not been without challenges, but his resilience and dedication have consistently seen him through. He has been a pillar of service in the local paddling scene, tirelessly training and sharing his knowledge with fellow club members. His resourcefulness and leadership have made him a valued member of the Bayside Outrigger Canoe Club, and his success on the international stage is a testament to his dedication and passion for the sport.

The World Va’a Marathon in Apia, Samoa, provided a stunning backdrop for Greg’s victory. The turquoise waters and vibrant local culture made the event even more memorable. As Greg stood on the podium, adorned with a gold medal, he not only represented Australia but also showcased the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship that defines outrigger paddling.
